Reading all the comments on the CBC website regarding the sale of NB Power to Hydro-Québec makes me a bit snarky. So, allow me to introduce you the top 10 reasons why NB Power should remain as it is today. Drum roll please…
10) NB Power is a money maker for the province. It made a $70 million profit last year (for a $1.5 billion business).
9) Paying more for power is good for energy conservation and makes New Brunswick industries run more efficiently.
New Brunswickers love power rate increases.
7) Burning oil and coal is an effective and sustainable way to produce electricity; it creates 300 good paying jobs in New Brunswick.
6) GHG reductions are for wimps. Real men don’t decrease their carbon footprint. And increased CO2 emissions will help forests grow faster.
5) We know oil prices won’t increase much in the coming years, so it’s a safe bet.
4) We can trust Danny Williams to sell NB Power whatever power it needs at a competitive price. Danny’s got all the power we need right now.
3) The NB Power management is second to none. They really know how to run a top-noch utility. They proved their foresight with deals such as the one with Venezuela with regards to Orimulsion.
2) NB Power doesn’t need hydro from Quebec. They can build a second nuclear plant at Point Lepreau on time and on budget.
1) We need to make sure the French are not taking over New Brunswick. The French are evil separatists.
